Nikola Đurek is Croatia's most prolific typographer, whose fonts have been in widespread use worldwide. Using his typographies has become a badge of honor for Croatian designers — as visible in the many works exhibited in this show. In addition to his more sedate fonts, Nikola has also designed a couple of striking typographies that draw on local origins.
One of such projects is font Glagolitic — digitalized Croatian Glagolitic script. The Glagolitic script is an original writing system that arrived to Croatia in 9th century and then, by 12th century, evolved to a new angular style called Croatian Glagolitic. Although first script used by Croats was Latin script, the first Croatian printed book Misal po zakonu rimskog dvora (1483) was written in Croatian Glagolitic. Printed only 28 years after Guttenberg's Bible, it was the first European missal that wasn't written in Latin language.
