White canvas sneakers Startas, a product of the Croatian Borovo factory, created at the end of the 1970s (primarily intended as table tennis shoes) became a synonym for canvas shoes in the former Yugoslavia. A new version, a reinterpretation of original Startas, plays amusingly with the collective memories in the region (for example, the pattern of the colours of the University Games held in Zagreb in 1987), recognised in international terms.
Today, the Borovo is a faltering factory in war depleted area. The designer's initiative to redesign the iconic Startas shoe is one of few examples of successful cooperation of design and Croatian industry.
