Since 1999, the Croatian Designers Association has been organizing biennial reviews of the domestic design production, always accompanied by fairly hefty catalogues. In the general impoverishment of Croatian design literature and also of the critical treatment of domestic design work, these publications have become an important point of reference. The review 040506 consists of two parts. A thick catalogue is devoted to recent works of Croatian designers created in the 2004 - 2006 period, while the second part is devoted to the laureate of the exhibition, recipient of the association’s Life Achievement Award, the designer Boris Bućan. The two publications are additionally pulled together visually and conceptually by the witty punning of the title page. The title page of the Bućan catalogue is a reproduction of his black and white poster for the exhibition of fellow designer Mihajlo Arsovski in 1972 (photo of posters on Zagreb streets). The cover of the catalogue of recent design works is its today’s reinterpretation, as well as editorial commentary on the condition and status of contemporary (visual) culture.
